Psilocybin Explained

Psilocybin retreats are increasingly popular, yet the substance at their core is still unfamiliar to many. This FAQ provides clear, accessible information to help you understand what psilocybin is, how it works, and what current research says. Frequently Asked Questions

What is psilocybin?

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound produced by certain species of mushrooms. It is present throughout the organism, in the fruiting body, the truffle (sclerotium), and the mycelium. Once ingested, the body converts psilocybin into psilocin, a molecule that interacts with serotonin receptors and temporarily alters perception and cognition.
This mechanism is currently being investigated for its potential in treating conditions such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In psilocybin-producing fungi, all anatomical parts contain the same active compound. The truffle, a compact underground nutrient reserve, forms when the mushroom enters a protective state in response to environmental stress.
In the Netherlands, where truffles remain legal, we are able to offer them because they contain a slightly milder concentration of psilocybin and are associated with fewer adverse reactions.

Available research, including reports from the Drug Policy Alliance, indicates that psilocybin does not cause dependency. The body quickly develops tolerance, meaning repeated use diminishes its effects, reducing the risk of compulsive consumption.
Interestingly, several studies now examine whether psilocybin could help address certain forms of addiction.

Beyond the intended alteration of perception, side effects are generally limited. Some individuals may experience nausea, dizziness, temporary anxiety, or an increase in heart rate. In rare cases, users report numbness, tremors, or paranoid thoughts.
For people without underlying psychiatric vulnerabilities, these reactions usually resolve on their own.

For safety reasons, psilocybin is not recommended for individuals with:

  • A diagnosed psychiatric condition such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or borderline personality disorder
  • A close family history of these conditions
  • Ongoing treatment with antidepressants, neuroleptics, or other medications affecting serotonin (medical advice is essential)
Participation is also not permitted during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Driving is strictly discouraged until the effects have completely worn off. As with any psychoactive substance, including legal medications, reaction time, coordination, and sensory perception can be impaired. Most people are safe to drive only once the body has fully metabolized the compound, typically 12 to 16 hours later.

Growing evidence suggests that psilocybin may alleviate symptoms of depression, particularly when traditional treatments have been ineffective. Our research section provides more detail on these studies.
However, it is important to note that Retraite Eveil does not offer medical or psychiatric treatment. Our retreats are wellness-oriented and do not substitute for clinical therapy.

Some medications interact poorly with psilocybin, particularly neuroleptics and antidepressants, as they influence similar neurological pathways. Anyone who has used these treatments within the last three years should speak with a qualified medical professional before considering a psychedelic experience.

Certain antidepressants increase serotonin availability, and, although rare, excessive serotonin levels may lead to serotonin syndrome. Similarly, individuals undergoing treatment for high blood pressure or kidney problems should refrain from consuming psychoactive substances.

ClassCommon MoleculesRecommendation
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)Citalopram, Escitalopram, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine, SertralineSeek medical advice before considering a retreat.
Serotonin–Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs)Desvenlafaxine, Duloxetine, Levomilnacipran, Milnacipran, VenlafaxineSeek medical advice before considering a retreat.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)Bifemelane, Caroxazone, Isocarboxazide, Moclobemide, Phenelzine, Selegiline, Tranylcypromine, etc.Avoid high doses of psilocybin.
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)Amitriptyline, Clomipramine, Imipramine, Nortriptyline, Trimipramine, etc.Use strongly discouraged.
Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (NRIs)Atomoxetine, Bupropion, Methylphenidate, Reboxetine, Teniloxazine, ViloxazineNot recommended.
Serotonin Modulators and StimulatorsTrazodone, Vilazodone, VortioxetineNot recommended.

If you are currently taking antidepressants for anxiety or depression, you cannot safely combine them with psilocybin truffles. Pausing treatment is generally not advisable. In limited situations, and only under medical supervision, some individuals may be able to suspend their medication for a short period in order to participate in a retreat in the Netherlands.

Retraite Eveil will never suggest discontinuing a prescribed treatment. A conversation with one or more medical professionals in your home country is essential before making any changes.

Current scientific information does not indicate any incompatibility between psilocybin and COVID-19 vaccines, including mRNA vaccines.
However, if you have been recently vaccinated or have recently recovered from the virus, it is advisable to wait approximately four weeks before planning a psychedelic experience.

If an immediate family member (parent, sibling, or grandparent) has been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, there may be a hereditary vulnerability. Psychedelic substances can interact unpredictably with such predispositions. For this reason, we do not recommend participating in a Retraite Eveil retreat without medical clearance. A consultation with a healthcare professional is essential.

Psilocybin is classified as an illicit substance in most parts of the world due to its mind-altering properties.
In 1966, the United States began restricting psychedelic use, a decision that led to the development of a United Nations treaty signed by more than 180 countries. This agreement effectively banned the cultivation, distribution, and consumption of several psychedelic compounds, a legal framework that still shapes global regulations and research limitations today.

If you reside in a country where psychedelic mushrooms or truffles are illegal, you cannot transport them. Possession and consumption remain prohibited in most jurisdictions.
Regardless of where you live, Retraite Eveil does not provide truffles to take away. We believe they should be consumed only in a calm, supportive environment under professional supervision.

Quite the opposite, this is often the ideal moment to deepen your therapeutic work. Psilocybin can temporarily lower emotional defenses, allowing greater openness and insight. Psychotherapy, coaching, or other forms of personal development are strongly encouraged after a psychedelic session. Psilocybin does not “cure” on its own; the benefits arise from how you integrate the experience.

The ceremonial framework is a symbolic way to prepare mentally and emotionally for the session. It is not tied to any specific belief system; participants are free to interpret it as they wish. This immersive environment helps cultivate intention, encourages psychological surrender, and marks the transition toward the inner work ahead.

We apply a strict screening process and decline applications when a participant’s health could present a risk to themselves or others.
During the retreat, an experienced team remains on-site to provide reassurance, manage anxiety or difficult moments, and intervene if any unsafe behavior arises. The retreat center is also located approximately 25 minutes from the nearest hospital for additional security.

Psilocybin-containing mushrooms are not considered toxic. However, individuals with known mushroom allergies may experience adverse reactions and therefore cannot participate in the retreat.

Psilocybin is a regulated substance

Check the regulations in your country. Psilocybin is not a medicine. A health questionnaire and review of contraindications are required. We use only psilocybin truffles, the sole form legal in the Netherlands.
