Biology

Not a culinary truffle. A survival structure.

What sclerotium means

A magic truffle is a sclerotium: a nutrient-rich mass of mycelium that forms underground when conditions are not right for mushrooms above the surface. This underground form connects ancient ethnobotany with modern neuroscience and mental health research.

Species include Psilocybe mexicana, tampanensis, atlantis, and galindoi. They share the same psychoactive alkaloids as psilocybin mushrooms and truffles, with a different growth form and a clearer legal framework in the Netherlands, including pathways for microdosing.

Popular varieties and their character

Each strain offers a different intensity, visual quality, and emotional tone. All contain psilocybin and psilocin, with profiles suited to different levels of experience.

Psilocybe tampanensis

Philosopher’s Stone

Calm and introspective. Gentle effects suited to newcomers seeking clarity and reflection.

Psilocybe mexicana A

Euphoric & colourful

Light, uplifting, emotionally warm. Subtle visuals and soft mood elevation.

Psilocybe atlantis

Deep & mystical

Stronger visuals and immersive shifts. Distinct mystical quality with manageable intensity.

Psilocybe hollandia

High potency

Elevated psilocybin levels. Powerful, highly visual. Best for experienced participants.

Psilocybe utopia

Prolonged dream

Slower onset, stable plateau, dreamlike flow. Valued for emotional exploration.

Chemistry

Psilocybin and psilocin

After ingestion, psilocybin converts to psilocin, which binds to serotonin receptors (especially 5-HT2A) and temporarily quiets the Default Mode Network. See our dosage guidelines for fresh-weight reference.

That shift opens perception, emotional processing, and deep introspection. Truffles are most often consumed fresh; ten grams fresh equals roughly three grams dried (storage guide).

A multidimensional experience

Sensory

Visual intensification, shifting patterns, heightened sound and touch.

Cognitive

Associative thinking, symbolic insight, altered sense of time and self.

Emotional

Release of tension, amplified empathy, tenderness or occasional intensity.

Spiritual

Unity, ego softening, archetypal imagery, connection to life or nature.

Typical phases of the journey

  1. Onset

30 to 60 minutes. Perceptual and emotional shifts begin.

  2. Peak

1 to 3 hours. The most immersive part of the experience.

  3. Comedown

1 to 2 hours. The mind gradually returns toward baseline.

  4. Afterglow

Hours afterward. Clarity, softness, and calm are common.

Why truffles over mushrooms?

Same compounds as magic mushrooms, with distinct advantages for guided, legal retreats.

  • Stability & shelf life

Fresh truffles keep potency longer than dried mushrooms when stored at 4-7°C. See how to store truffles.

  • Predictable dosing

Dutch cultivators label variety, potency, and recommended amounts in our dosage tables.

  • Gradual onset

Higher water content means smoother entry and fewer abrupt peaks, often preferred for first guided experiences.

  • Clear legal status

Legal in the Netherlands since mushrooms were restricted in 2008, enabling regulated retreat programmes.

  • Safer than foraging

Cultivated strains remove the risk of toxic lookalike species. Learn safe consumption practices.

Set & setting

Why container matters as much as chemistry

Preparation, calm music, a quiet room, and a grounded facilitator are not optional extras. They define whether the experience is safe and meaningful.

Retraite Éveil integrates intention-setting, professional support during the journey, and structured integration afterward. Explore our structured retreat programmes.
